What is a West Point Quarter? In 2020 The US Mint will release 4 new quarter designs. These will be new designs for the America the Beautiful Quarter series which ends in 2021. This year there will be over 1 billion new quarters entering circulation. In the year 2020 there will only be 8 million West Point coins minted.

What is a 2020 West Point Quarter?

The Mint will only create 2 million of each design in 2020. This is a total of 8 million coins. Every 2020 W quarter struck at the West Point Mint will all bear a “W” mint mark. Additionally, this year they will receive the V75 privy mark. No previous quarter has received a privy mark. You might be asking yourself; what is a privy mark?

What is a privy mark?

In the mid to late 1800s the US Mint chose to use small symbols on coins as privy marks. Minted coins had privy marks added to show the production differed from another production run. Most records from the US Mint do not refer to the markings as privy marks. Privy marks were to meant to be design features. From 1853 to 1855, silver coins featured arrows near the date below seated liberty coins. This was to show they had a reduced silver weight in each coin. As a result the mint added the silver weight back and they reintroduced them without arrows.

What is special about V75 West Point?

These limited edition quarter designs are struck at the West Point mint in West Point, New York. The US Mint is also honoring the 75th year since the end of World War II by adding a privy mark. The design includes a V75 lettering inside an outline. This outline is the shape of the Rainbow Pool WWII Memorial in D.C.

What West Point Quarters will feature this privy mark?

2020 marks the first coins released with this marking will be the 5 quarter designs made at West Point. The mint released the American Samoa and Weir Farms on April 6. As a result, they will strike the following designs.

  • Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve
  • Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park

How do I find a West Point Quarter?

Two million of each 2020 W design will get mixed into circulation. W coins get mixed among ‘P’ and ‘D’ mint mark quarters. One million of each is then sent into circulation from the West Point Mint. No ‘W’ quarters will get mixed into bulk bags. The Mint will scatter the coins at random within shipments of D and P coins. They then will be delivered to Federal Reserve contracted armored carriers. Carriers then deliver the coins to financial institutions.

What are these 2020 W coins worth?

Currently they’re only worth a face value of 25 cents. However, the week that 2020 W Privy quarters got released they sold for record prices.
